02/07/10 X Games' new Best Whippersnapper

Grant 'Goba' ObrienYoung Jarryd McNeil throwing down his best whip, proving he does indeed belong in ... Best Whip.

If you're a hardcore fan of freestyle motocross, and you follow it as so, then you surely know about the X Games Best Whip controversy that seems to be going on ... for the third year in a row. It's NO secret that Oregon's Beau Bamburg has one of -- if not the -- meanest whips in the game. Since his wee days of rocking baggy SMP gear while riding his Yamaha YZ125 in the Northwest backwoods, Bamburg has been turning heads and causing heart palpitations around the world with his beyond inverted, super-stylish whips. So knowing this, why hasn't he been invited to ride Best Whip at X Games 14, 15, and 16? This is a question both Bamburg and the entire FMX community has been asking for the past three years, but no legitimate reason has been given.

So, you can imagine how mind-boggling it was when we learned that virtually-unknown 18-year-old Aussie Jarryd McNeil got an invite to throw down with the likes of Todd Potter, James Stewart, Myles Richmond, Josh Grant and others. The big question (at least in America) is "Who is this McNeil kid and why did he get the opportunity to ride Best Whip instead of Bamburg?" I did some digging and I still don't have a solid answer, but I do know that the kid can indeed throw down a solid turndown whip, which he's been doing on the Nitro Circus Live tour alongside Travis Pastrana. Awe ... it's all starting to make sense now.

To help us understand the madness, our good buddy Josh at Firestorm Films sent us a vid of McNeil throwing down his whips during a recent practice session. Peep his whips and voice your opinion. Does Bamburg deserve a spot in Best Whip? Was McNeil a good call? Let your voice be heard.
