08/02/10 Red Bull Butter Cup Goes Down at Mountain Creek

It was a colder than normal day Saturday when Red Bull partnered up with Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ to put on this season's third stop of the Red Bull Butter Cup series.

Nested at the base of Mountain Creek's South Peak, Red Bull Butter Cup participants warmed up the atmosphere with some slick presses and smooth buttering. With an array of butter pads at their disposal and some sick tunes provided by DJ Anubus, the nearly 100 competitors put on quite a show for the Mountain Creek crowd.

The Am division broke in the butter pads first with some tricky sequences. Genci Mirzo came through with first place honours followed by Bryan Watson and John Coladanatl respectively.

The pro division was host to a fierce battle for first and second place between riders Tom Weiss and Billy Keil. However it was Weiss's decision to throw all his tricks switch and to ultimately link together a switch 180 on, back 360 over the flat to back 180 out on the gap box, and a 360 on and 360 out over the battleship box to put him over the top. Billy Keil was hot on his heels however with his own sequence of tricks, linking together a 270 on paired with a 270 off to a blunt 450 which landed Billy in second place. Luke Henning, with consistent runs full of good blunts, nice presses and smooth spins secured him the 3rd place position. Local judge Greg Feary, an up and coming photog, remarked about the heated competition, "It was a hard decision for first place with Billy and Tom, both have a really good style and have a whole bag of tricks!"

Pro division winner Tom Weiss was stoked on the day. "It was sick! A lot of fun, good vibes, the format was really fun and there was no pressure at all, it was just a chill sesh."

A course made for the riders was a common theme with Jay Saltzman, a former US open, Grand Prix and Triple Crown judge remarking that, "I really enjoyed this event. It went off great, the features were awesome and most importantly, all the riders loved it."

The Red Bull Butter Cup contest series started on the East Coast but has now expanded throughout the U.S. in only its second year. Red Bull Butter Cup is all about how much style snowboarders can spread onto the custom-made features also known as "butter pads." Riders jib, bonk, tap and slide across the pads, making sure to lay it on thick with a lot of smooth buttering. Regional athletes battle it out in jam format sessions, carving and spreading the snow like butter for cash and prizes. Overall style and creativity will help the cream rise to the top, so be ready to spread it on in this purely pasteurised competition.
